Detention

Also known as: Container Detention, Trailer Detention, Equipment Detention

Definition

Detention fees apply when you keep a carrier’s container or trailer at your facility longer than permitted. Unlike demurrage (at terminals), detention occurs at customer locations during loading or unloading.

How Detention Works

  1. Container/trailer arrives at your facility
  2. Free time clock starts (typically 2-4 hours)
  3. Fees begin after free time expires
  4. Charges accrue until equipment returns

Detention Rates

Equipment Hourly Rate Daily Rate
Container $75-150 $150-300
Trailer $50-100 $100-200
