Driver Release
Also known as: No Signature Required, Leave at Door, Contactless Delivery
Definition
Driver release is when a carrier’s driver leaves a package at a delivery location without obtaining a signature. The driver uses their judgment to find a secure spot—front door, side porch, or with a neighbor—and records the delivery as complete.
How Driver Release Works
- Arrival - Driver arrives at delivery address
- Assessment - Evaluates location security
- Placement - Leaves package in secure spot
- Documentation - Records delivery location/time
- Photo - Takes delivery photo (if applicable)
- Departure - Marks as delivered in system
When Drivers Release Packages
Carriers typically release when:
- Address appears safe and secure
- Weather conditions allow
- Package value is under threshold
- No signature service selected
- Shipper has authorized release
When Drivers Won’t Release
- Signature required service purchased
- High-value shipments
- Adult signature items (alcohol, tobacco)
- Weather too severe
