Serial Number Tracking

Also known as: Serialization, Serial Tracking, Unit-Level Tracking

Definition

Serial number tracking is the process of assigning a unique identifier to each individual item (not batches) and recording that identifier throughout the product’s lifecycle—from manufacturing through sales and service. It provides the highest level of inventory traceability.

What Is Serial Number Tracking?

Definition

Each unit has its own unique number that:

  • Identifies that specific item
  • Follows it through supply chain
  • Links to customer/sale
  • Tracks through service/warranty

Serial Number Example

Product: Laptop Computer
Serial: SN-2024-US-0001234
        │ │ │ │
        │ │ │ └── Unique sequence
        │ │ └─────── Region code
        │ └─────────── Year
        └─────────────── Prefix

This exact number exists on only ONE laptop.

Serial vs. Lot Tracking

Feature Serial Tracking Lot Tracking
Granularity Individual item Batch/group
Uniqueness One per unit One per batch
Data volume High Lower
Cost Higher Lower
Use case High-value, regulated Commodities, food

Why Serial Tracking Matters
