Signature Required
Also known as: Signature Confirmation, Direct Signature, Adult Signature Required
Definition
Signature required is a shipping service that prevents carriers from leaving packages unattended. Someone must be present to sign—either physically or electronically—before the driver will release the package.
Types of Signature Services
Basic Signature
- Any person at address can sign
- Electronic or physical signature
- Most common and affordable option
Direct Signature
- Only someone at the specific address can sign
- Can’t leave with neighbor or building office
- Stricter than basic signature
Adult Signature (21+)
- Recipient must show valid ID proving age 21+
- Required for alcohol, certain medications
- Highest security level
Indirect Signature
- Can be released to neighbor or building manager
- Alternative to failed delivery attempt
- Maintains some verification
Signature Service Costs
| Carrier | Basic Signature | Adult Signature |
|---|---|---|
| USPS | ~$3.45 | ~$8.50 |
| UPS | ~$5.75 | ~$7.00 |
| FedEx | ~$5.75 | ~$7.00 |
Prices vary by service level and volume discounts.
When to Require Signatures
Recommended for:
- High-value items ($100+)
- Items with high theft rates
- Age-restricted products
- Important documents
- Areas with package theft history
- Business/legal requirements
May not be necessary for:
- Low-value items
- Repeat customers with no issues
- Secure delivery locations
- Time-sensitive deliveries (inconvenient for recipient)
What Happens at Delivery
If someone is available:
- Driver requests signature
- Recipient signs pad or paper
- Package released
- Signature captured as proof
If no one is available:
- Driver leaves notice
- Package returned to facility
- Redelivery attempted next day
- May be held for pickup after attempts
Signature vs. No Signature
| Consideration | With Signature | Without |
|---|---|---|
| Theft protection | Higher | Lower |
| Convenience | Lower | Higher |
| Delivery success | May take multiple attempts | Usually first attempt |
| Proof of receipt | Strong | Photo or scan only |
| Cost | Higher | Included |
Release Options
Some carriers offer authorization to leave without signature:
- UPS My Choice - Pre-authorize specific deliveries
- FedEx Delivery Manager - Sign release online
- USPS - Signature waiver for some services
This shifts liability to the recipient.
For E-commerce Sellers
Signature policies:
- Set threshold (e.g., require over $100)
- Offer as checkout option
- Default for high-risk areas
- Required for chargebacks protection
Consider customer impact:
- Some customers can’t be home during delivery hours
- May delay receipt or cause frustration
- Balance security with convenience
