Split Shipment
Also known as: Partial Shipment, Multi-Package Order, Split Order
Definition
A split shipment divides one order into multiple packages that may ship separately. This happens when items are in different warehouses, too large for one box, or some items are backordered.
Reasons for Split Shipments
- Items in different fulfillment centers
- Mixed availability (some backordered)
- Size/weight limits exceeded
- Hazmat separation requirements
- Faster delivery for available items
Split Shipment Implications
| Factor | Impact |
|---|---|
| Shipping cost | Multiple packages = higher cost |
| Customer experience | Multiple deliveries |
| Tracking | Multiple tracking numbers |
| Environmental | More packaging waste |
